Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well mixed.
  3. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  4. Slowly add hot coffee or water to thin out the batter while mixing until fully combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
  6. Bake in preheated oven for 18–20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
  8. In another bowl, beat the softened butter until fluffy.
  9. Gradually add powdered sugar while alternating with heavy cream.
  10. Mix in vanilla extract and desired food coloring until smooth.
  11. For each sugar cone, dip its outer side in melted chocolate and let it set.
  12. Place each cone upside down on a chocolate wafer cookie to form a hat shape.
  13. Decorate with sprinkles or edible glitter if desired.
  14. Frost cooled cupcakes using a piping bag or spatula. Gently place a finished witch hat on top of each frosted cupcake and serve!
